Aesop’s Fables: The ant and the grasshopper


伊索寓言：螞蟻與蚱蜢

 One summer’s day, in a field, a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great effort an ear of corn he was taking to his nest.


 "Why don’t you come and chat with me," asked the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling your life away?"


 "I am helping to store up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and I recommend you to do the same."


 "Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper. "We have got plenty of food at present."


 The Ant and the Grasshopper Story

But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.


 When winter came, the Grasshopper found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing, every day, corn and grain from the stores they had collected in summer.


 Then the Grasshopper knew...

My fable synopsis: The ants worked hard while the grasshopper played all summer and fall until the winter. They put away heavy corn kernels in their anthill. They refused to give the grasshopper anything to eat when he died of hunger in the winter. He played too much! He thought winter was far away, weeks on, but it came soon. The ants knew winter was soon and prepared for it.

Every day, he used to take the herd of sheep to the top of the hill and bring them back in the evening. One day, he got very bored. He thought of a plan to amuse himself. He went over to the edge of the hill and started shouting “Help! Help! There is a wolf. He is eating all our sheep.” Hearing the boy cry out for help, the villagers came running to the top of the hill to save the sheep. But, when they reached, they saw calm sheep grazing the grassland.
